China Marriage Registration Rules Fuel a “Sweet Economy”

China marriage registration is now open to couples at any qualified civil affairs registry nationwide, a change that took effect in May 2025. Local authorities from Jiangsu to Yunnan are using it to offer football stadiums, mountain backdrops and campuses as wedding venues, Xinhua reported on November 1, 2026.

The goal is to make marriage easier, more personal and easier to pair with travel. Governments are also adding health checks, legal advice and wedding vouchers for newlyweds.

What Changed in China’s Marriage Rules

China’s marriage rules used to require couples to register where one partner held their household registration. That requirement is gone, so couples can now marry in a city they love.

The core legal rules have not changed. The legal marriage age is 22 for men and 20 for women, and both parties must appear in person with valid identification. amazingshenzhen

Marriage in China Today: From Stadiums to Mountains

Marriage in China today looks very different from a queue at a government service hall. Couples are picking venues that match their interests and love stories.

Wu Jingyu, a football fan, registered her marriage outside a stadium during a Jiangsu Football City League match in Wuxi. A photo wall and red platform were set up, and cheering fans surrounded the couple. She called it unforgettable.

In Nanjing, couples can wear Han-style wedding robes and phoenix crowns for their ceremony. Other cities have added registration to music festivals, and some universities hold group weddings for returning alumni.

By the end of 2025, China had set up 1,330 outdoor certificate presentation sites and 525 registration sites in parks and landmarks, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Zhou Yongbo, a professor at Soochow University, said younger Chinese want a personal experience and lasting memories, not only a certificate.

Inside the “Sweet Economy”

The wedding industry is growing fast alongside the policy. Yunnan Province has become a destination-wedding hotspot thanks to its tourism and cut-flower industries.

In Lijiang, couples marry in front of Yulong Snow Mountain under arches of white roses. The city drew more than 140,000 couples in 2025, and its wedding market passed 1.1 billion yuan.

Wedding planner Yang Libin shifted to customized destination weddings in 2025 and organized more than 280 in the first year. His team uses questionnaires to learn each couple’s story before designing the day.

Photography packages that include costumes, makeup, transport and accommodation cost around 10,000 yuan (about $1,500). In nearby Dali, businesses have built over 30 wedding settings around Erhai Lake and Cangshan Mountain.

Groom Wang Yu from Hebei held his ceremony in the morning and shot photos by the lake in the afternoon while relatives toured the area. He said combining marriage with travel made it easy.

Public Services for Newlyweds

Governments are also improving support around the registration itself. In Beijing’s Haidian District, a premarital health center sits inside the marriage registration office, so couples can finish a health check and registration the same day.

In Chengdu, court teams hand out legal handbooks and brief couples on spousal rights, joint property and family dispute resolution. Many areas offer wedding consumption vouchers, and several provinces have extended marriage leave, with the longest reaching 30 days.

China introduced 23 measures in 2025 to support childbirth and child-rearing. Zhou said pairing registration with premarital education helps young people avoid registering on impulse.

China Marriage Age: Legal Limits and Real Averages

The legal China marriage age is 22 for men and 20 for women. Few couples actually marry that young.

The average marriage age in China for females has risen steadily. In the 2020 census, women marrying for the first time averaged 27.95 years and men 29.38, with an overall average of 28.67, up from 24.89 in 2010. chinaservicesinfo

Big cities run older. Shanghai’s official data showed the average age at first marriage in 2025 was 29.7, with women at 29.1 and men at 30.3. shanghai

Marriage in China for Foreigners

Marriage in China for foreigners has stricter requirements than for locals. Chinese authorities generally do not register a marriage between two foreigners, so one partner must be a mainland Chinese citizen, and both must attend in person. wise

Foreign partners typically need a valid passport, a notarized and legalized certificate of marriageability or non-impediment from their home country, and Chinese translations of foreign-language documents. hicom-asia

Procedures vary by city, so confirm the document list with your local registry before booking.

Chinese Marriage Dowry and Bride Price

The term Chinese marriage dowry is often used for two separate customs. Traditionally, the groom’s family gives a bride price (caili) to the bride’s family, while a dowry (jiazhuang) is what the bride’s family may provide for the new home.

No law requires either one, and customs differ by region and family. Authorities have criticised very high bride prices and promoted simpler weddings. Wedding vouchers aim to ease costs for newlyweds.

Arranged Marriage in China History

Arranged marriage in China history was the norm for centuries. Parents and matchmakers chose spouses, and couples often met only on the wedding day.

The 1950 Marriage Law banned arranged and forced marriages and established free choice of partner. Today’s couples decide everything, down to the venue, which is the biggest shift in China’s marriage history.
