Riyadh Schools Remote Learning Ordered Amid Houthi Attacks

Schools across Riyadh switched to remote learning starting Sunday after Saudi authorities ordered a week-long closure. The decision came through last-minute emails sent directly to parents, according to messages seen by AFP.

The Riyadh schools remote learning order affected campuses citywide. This included the American International School in Riyadh and other international school in Riyadh options serving expatriate families.

What Parents Were Told

Two separate messages seen by AFP carried the same core line: Saudi authorities had informed schools that they must remain closed all week. No official reason was given in the notices.

The abruptness left many families frustrated. One parent living in Riyadh, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said families deserved clear communication and transparency. A decision affecting an entire school community for a full week demands that, they said.

A Lebanese expatriate living in Riyadh echoed that frustration. She called it a last-minute decision made with no clarity on what was actually happening.

Why the Closures Happened

While no official explanation accompanied the closure notices, the timing lines up with escalating regional tensions. The move came a day after the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said it had intercepted drones and ballistic missiles aimed at the kingdom.

This was not an isolated incident. Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have been escalating since July, when renewed hostilities broke a years-long truce and pulled Yemen deeper into the wider Middle East conflict.

The United Nations Security Council has already condemned the rising attacks, pointing out that strikes have wounded civilians, including women and children.

Impact on International School Families in Riyadh

For families connected to an international school in Riyadh, the sudden shift to remote learning raises fresh logistics questions. Those questions are about coordinating online classes, checking embassy advisories, and staying alert to further updates from Saudi authorities.

Some parents monitoring the situation have also been checking practical details like riyadh time now and what time is it in riyadh to coordinate with relatives abroad. Or plan potential travel through riyadh airport if the security situation shifts further.

What Happens Next

Saudi authorities have not indicated whether the closure will extend beyond the week or whether it applies uniformly to all schools in the city. Parents are being told to watch for further emails and official guidance.
