Hardware Wallet Crypto Safety After Binance’s $6.3bn Hack

The US Secret Service says it is working around the clock to trace and recover the $6.3bn stolen from crypto exchange Binance in a hack that struck on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The record theft has left many users asking whether a hardware wallet crypto setup is safer than keeping coins on an exchange.

Binance says user funds are not affected and that it will cover all losses. The incident still shows how much risk can sit in one place.

What the US Secret Service Has Said

The agency leads US federal investigations into financial crimes. It says it is working with private sector partners to identify, freeze, trace and recover the stolen funds.

It is also coordinating with the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and other law enforcement partners. The Secret Service said its investigation is still in its early stages and that more details will follow.

The FBI has also said it is aware of the incident and is working with public and private partners to understand its scope.

How the Binance Hack Happened

Most of the $6.36bn left Binance wallets in about 20 minutes, starting at 20:05 GMT on Thursday. Ari Redbord of crypto analytics firm TRM Labs said that speed points to long preparation.

Binance first said the attack may have started with a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. Co-CEO Richard Teng later said the full picture is wider, and that investigators have found more points of breach.

He said more than one person was involved. The attackers also used a self-destruct mechanism that wiped tools and traces as they went, which makes tracking them harder.

Teng added that the hackers abused a system called EIP-7702 to get past Binance’s usual approval controls. The affected wallet was Binance’s own hot wallet, not customer funds, he said.

Who Is Blamed for the Binance Hack?

No one has been confirmed yet, but analysts are pointing to North Korea. TRM Labs says it has high confidence that the group known as TraderTraitor, or Lazarus, is responsible.

Chainalysis, another analytics firm, also reports a high degree of confidence. It says the stolen coins mixed with funds taken from a different exchange hack last month that was also linked to North Korean actors.

North Korea has always denied involvement in such hacks. Binance has not answered the BBC’s questions about any link.

Is Binance Safe? What Customers Should Do Now

Binance says the vast majority of user assets sit in cold wallets, and that it found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. It has not published a list of affected accounts.

Customers can check balances, transaction history and security alerts in the official app or website. If anything looks wrong, log out of all sessions, review security settings and change the password.

Use an authenticator app or passkey for security codes instead of text messages. A clean account does not guarantee that nothing was affected, so stay alert.

Hardware Wallet Crypto: Is It Safer Than an Exchange?

When you buy crypto through an exchange, the exchange holds the keys on your behalf. That is convenient, but it means one successful attack can hit many users at once.

A hardware wallet is a small physical device that keeps your private keys offline. Transactions are approved on the device, so the keys never sit on an internet-connected computer.

That is why hardware wallet crypto storage is often described as the safer choice for long-term holders. It also moves the responsibility to you. If you lose the device and your recovery phrase, you can lose access to your coins for good.

It is not a shield against everything either. Phishing scams still work, and security reporters note a rise in attacks where people are physically pressured to hand over their keys. Weigh the trade-offs before moving any funds. This is information only, not financial advice.

Crypto Currency Market Reacts, but Holds Up

The price of Bitcoin fell by around 4 to 5% after the news. It lost about $3,000 from roughly $80,000, which some observers see as a sign the market has matured.

In the early days of crypto currency, a theft of this kind could knock 20% or 30% off a coin’s value in a day. Some venues froze trading, so the real reaction may only show once trading resumes.

Many traders are also watching the crypto fear and greed index. It scores market mood from extreme fear to extreme greed, and it tends to swing quickly after big news like this.

Binance Has Been Hacked Before

This is not the first breach at the exchange. In May 2019, hackers stole 7,000 bitcoins, then worth about $41m, and Binance suspended withdrawals for several days.

It paid users back from an emergency insurance fund. This time it says it has reserved more than $6.3bn from company funds to cover losses, and it plans to publish a proof-of-reserves report by Monday.
